I don't know what the right approach is, I do know that the UN desperate fears a domino effect where nations wake up and stop funding harm to their own interests. So many UN agencies are operating against Western values and interests while rewarding the very nations and groups which are making the world unstable.
The U.S needs to lead a new International group of "like-minded" nations, with each pledging to uphold civil liberties and free market principles.
Make an alternative to the U.N while still remaining inside the UN. No different than China and others creating BRICS. American can do the same as long as they demand adherence to the principles they set out.
