Remember that tariffs are a tax paid by your own people.

They have issued a 400 page consultation document to business and asked for feedback.

I havent heard of a lot of this stuff but I imagine our importers will source products from other places. China maybe ? Or Vietnam or the Heard Islands.

They arent in business to have empty shelves.

Putting tariffs on products should be a delicate balancing act. You do not want to penalise your own people but want to place pressure on the other country.

So I would look at products that can be sourced somewhere else. Prices can be maintained while ensuring that all the pain is felt in the US. I would also try and ensure that he pain is felt in GOP areas.

In that way we protect decent people while punishing the trash who inflicted this shit.

This could be a big win for the world as it breaks free of US hegemony. But it needs careful planning.
