Are Tariffs A Good Idea?

In economics - as in science, medicine, and diplomacy - Trump's experience in his first term is paying off, as he now knows enough to appoint unqualified lickspittles as ignorant and ideologically perverse as he is.

He is befouling the nation.

It's the Dunning-Kruger administration.

Reagan driven to cut Japanese auto imports

Auto makers came here. Later he let them expire but many plants were already built
Trade WARS are never good. Tariffs can be positive if a scalpel is used to promote one (or a few) products we need to generate growth in.

Having said that, Trump is a total incompetent idiot that does not know his ass from a hole on the ground and what he is doing is going to generate trade disasters.

No nation can produce all the parts needed to build a product. Each nation has some specialty that they are good at. As such, working together on trade (like we have done with Canada and Mexico for the past 30 years) offers more benefits than negatives. Yes, some items need to be "tariffed" but not the "blanket" tariff war that is built more on revenge than on intelligent thought.

You will soon see just how much damage Trump will cause with this. The worst part of it all, is that often, making mistakes is a learning experience that gives us knowledge on how to do things better. In Trump's case and him being a narcissist to the nth degree, he never learns from his mistakes. What he does mostly is repeat his mistakes to the nth degree and then when the damage is done (and can't be reversed), he will blame others for the problem.

This man is a walking catastrophe. You will soon see for yourself. You too will feel the pain.

I see the exact opposite of tariffs as the most ideal form of taxes. A system where exports are taxed, not imports. Extreme examples are countries of the Middle East which use their oil resources to pass on their government spending and tax burdens to other countries.

Tariffs used sparingly to protect a very few select industries seems reasonable as long as they do not promote the gouging of Americans by those protected industries.

It's the Dunning-Kruger administration.

For the most part, I'm a Trump supporter and am generally happy with the direction he's taking the country. It's too soon to know what the long term effects of his executive orders and policies will be but I'm very happy with DOGE and very happy with sending illegals back to their crapholes.

By the same token, I believe in transparency and calling a spade a spade. I started out by saying that "for the most part" I'm happy with Trump but everyone has their flaws and/or weaknesses. I'm still on the fence where Tariffs are concerned. I sell welding supplies, gases, and equipment for a living. I just received this message from Lincoln Electric (a major manufacturer of welding machines and filler metals):

"February 12, 2025

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for your continued business and support of Lincoln Electric. We advised you in our December 5th, 2024 letter that we would continue to monitor the effects of potential tariffs and, if necessary, we would implement tariff-related price adjustments with short notice. As you are aware, the U.S. Government imposed additional tariffs on China that went into effect on February 4, 2025.
These short-notice tariff-related increases have had a dramatic impact on the input cost of many Lincoln Electric products. As a result, we will be implementing price increases on affected Lincoln Electric products. The affected product categories at this time are helmets, accessories, expendables and parts. Pricing for these products will increase by ten percent (10%).
In addition, effective February 12, 2025, the price for all Lincoln Electric products, including consumables and equipment, will be the price at the time of shipment. The prices on Lincoln Electric Order Acknowledgements dated on or after February 12, 2025, will be subject to change until the date of shipment.
We are working to mitigate changes while ensuring we continue to provide uninterrupted service and support to you and your customers. We will continue to monitor the volatile tariff dynamics closely and implement additional changes as necessary.
Distributor-specific price files will be available via the On-Demand Price File request tool on your 'My Lincoln' account by Thursday, February 13th, 2025.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding during these turbulent times. If you have any questions, please reach out to your local Lincoln representative.
Sincerely,

Albert L. Castillo
Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Americas"

Of course, this will translate into higher prices for my customers. A 5% or 10% increase on a $5000.00 or $12,000.00 or $20,000.00 welding machine is pretty significant. So I'm not too sure tariffs are going to be a good idea. At least not from my perspective.
How/Why are you happy with the direction he is taking our economy? It doesn't seem well thought out. On again off again tariffs are fucking with the economy. The stock market is tanking. And if he does across the board tariffs, your prices are going to go up.

With cars, almost every car made in America has parts that come from other countries. You want all those parts companies to come back to America? You think that's realistic?

Have Republicans thought this through? If we only buy American, the rest of the world won't buy from us. If we aren't trading with them, they'll find someone else who will. So we are going to give up all our international customers? Or do you think they will buy from us no matter what? Because you would be wrong to think that.

I think you are being conned. They say what he's doing is going to pay off, in 2 years? Imagine if Kamala were doing this and told you to trust her. Would you? Of course not. You'd be calling for her to be impeached.

And with all the illegals gone, how come wages aren't going up? Instead we see Republicans introducing bills to allow 14 year olds to work 10pm to 6am on a school night. I thought the day illegals left there would be job postings offering American wages to American workers. No?

Trump still thinks that the other countries pay these tariffs. He thinks this is only a penalty on them.

Whomever he has around him, whomever he's listening to on this, is doing Trump and the country a great disservice.

They should know how ignorant he is.
Tariffs get paid to the US government. If the importing countries sell them at a higher price, that's on them and encourages people to buy American. The money from the tariff will offset any increased prices by being used to lower the deficit and inflation.

The tariffs are paid by Americans.
Bullshit. Apparently, you have bought into liberal disinformation. If you don't buy the products at the increased prices, you don't pat shit! You buy American. The imported shit sits on a shelf because it costs more. They get a better product in most cases and keep your neighbors employed.

Trump, in scientific, medical, and seemingly every other academic discipline, deludes himself and his lickspittles into believing that he knows more than the experts.

Economics is no exception.

In fact, there is no record of even a single doctor ever asking him this. Just as there is no evidence of Black immigrants eating pet dogs and cats in Springfield, OH, or anywhere else in the country, nor any of his inexplicable stolen landslide in the 2020 presidential election that was certified by every state and Congress.

The cult leader brays, "Pull my finger!" and they do so every time, his tariff fantasy no exception.

... While Trump has promised that his new tariffs will pressure companies to open more factories inside the U.S. and lead to better trade deals with other countries, prominent economists and researchers for banks predict the new tariffs will lead to fewer jobs, a higher unemployment rate, and a drop in the U.S. gross domestic product.
Trump relished taking credit for moving the stock market. During his first term he routinely told supporters ... Since the election, the stock market has surged!”
That’s changed. Since Trump took office, the stock market has faltered. The uncertainty around Trump’s vows to move forward with punishing tariffs on imports has rattled investors; the S&P 500 and Nasdaq just finished out their worst quarter since 2022. And new polling shows that Americans are losing faith in how Trump is handling the economy...
Recent polling has shown that an increasing number of Americans are worried about the impact Trump’s actions are having on the U.S. economy. A Fox News poll conducted in mid-March found that 53% of voters thought tariffs harm the U.S. economy and 28% believed they help. The poll also found 69% of voters think tariffs make products more expensive, a view shared by mainstream economists. An AP-NORC pool conducted at the end of March found that 60% of US adults disapprove of Trump’s handling of trade negotiations.

The democrats are fighting very hard to block the Tariffs... they are almost in a frenzy over it... if tariffs will cause so much harm why don't they just let it happen and win the next elections?.... I think I may know why...
The dems have cooked up a way to get rich from other nations like China for keeping tariffs from going into effect for decades and they are afraid it will leak out... and the money will dry up... money they use to steal elections and pad their accounts....

They are bringing the U.S. down for the WEF. Not to mention laundering their asses off.

I believe Ronald Reagan had a more realistic view of tariffs than does Trump. But only time will tell.

Ronald Reagan on tariffs:

“You see, at first, when someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works —but only for a short time.”

”What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.

“The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying.”

“Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.”

Too early to say if Trump's economic plan will have positive, long-term results. Will it turn out to be a complete flop or blunder or will we witness the greatest economic recovery since the golden age of American manufacturing?

I remember the Clinton/Bush era of Globalism and "free trade" agreements that sent American manufacturers overseas at a record pace. They (Globalist politicians & amoral businesses) basically took advantage of the Chinese sweat shops which resulted in low quality goods at extremely cheap prices. Now nearly everything comes from China or India and American companies can hardly compete.

Not only are foreign companies killing us on the price war but other companies have placed obscenely high tariffs on the USA while squawking when we dare reciprocate.

As it stands, we clearly have to endure some growing pains while Trump's economic adjustment takes shape. The Democrats and RINOS didn't destroy the American economy overnight. It took decades for their anti-American plan to really take shape so we can't expect Trump to undo decades of destruction in a few, short months.

It’s too early because no one knows. This isn’t how business operates. You don’t plan, hire, invest when the game changes monthly.

You’re putting a lot of trust in this con man

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said that "we have to pass the bill in order to know what's in the bill?" Nobody knew how badly Obamacare would hurt Americans until it ran it's course. Lots of people put trust in Obama (a con man extraordinaire).

We know for a fact that the Biden method of trade and economics was a complete disaster. All I know is that we have to do something drastic to repair the damage. Is Trump's method the answer? We shall see.

No,! That’s just it. The economy was fine. What needed fixing was being fixed the right way. People unionizing, demanding more money from their employers. And dealing with high prices. Trumps not doing that.

Obama wasn’t a con man. If he was, his goal was to give millions of poor people healthcare. Wah.

Our trade policies aren’t out of wack. And illegals weren’t taking your job. We had zero unemployment. And now that illegals are gone, wages aren’t going up.

I’ll give you this. We are fucked because trump bankrupted several companies. He’s an idiot. And you idiots are still falling for it. Now you are telling us it might be a bumpy 2 years? How fucking stupid are you people? Wow

Nothing trumps doing is making sense or working but give it two years.
