Ralph Nader occasionally shares an anecdote about the time he told his father that what America needs is a good third party. “I’ll settle for a second,” his father replied.

So true but many Americans somehow, amazingly think one is better than the other.

Well depending on the compilation of the issues and policies to address the issues, then yes one can be triumphant over the other, and can be seen as better than the other in the eyes of the electorate.

Has there ever been 3rd party president?

Only once has one of the two major parties finished third in a presidential election, when not the result of a realignment: in 1912, the Progressive Party, with former president Theodore Roosevelt their presidential candidate, surpassed the Republicans.

Why do 3rd parties fail?

The reason is simple. Because our political system has been dominated by the two main parties for so long, many voters feel that it will always be that way. Because of this acceptance, they continue to blindly follow one or the other. They believe that a vote for a third party candidate is a "wasted vote".

Will then, since it hasn’t ever happened before, it NEVER will.

Does that make logical sense to you?

You might want to research why there aren’t effective third parties?

It is all a sham and those that have seen behind the curtain know Oz is ran but one Wizard and a Bunch of Munchkins from Munchkinville...

Of course I wish someone would throw water on Cortez to see if she melt but alas that is a different story for another thread...

The average American can not be bother with learning about the politician they vote for and just look at the R and D after their name but is there really that much difference?

Trump was a donor for the Democratic Party for Decades and now is a Republican and Bloomberg was a Republican the entire time he was Mayor of New York and now he is a Democrat, so when will we have two totally different political parties and not kissing cousins?

What is the most successful third party in American history?
In the 1912 U.S. Presidential elections, former President Teddy Roosevelt emerged as the most successful third party presidential candidate in the history of the country when he bagged 88 Electoral votes and 27% of the popular vote in the election on behalf of the Progressive Party of the United States.

Does that make logical sense to you?
I believe we live in a failed system that no longer makes sense , or provided logical conclusions for the masses it serves Gip

First sniff.....$$$

google "election ballots" from 100 years ago and you'll find MULTIPLE parties on the ballots.

which all got gobbled up into the 2 remaining parties.

Fun fact: All 3rd parties have to spend inordinate amounts of money in most states just to attain ballot status.

The duopoly has other rigs in the system in the various states that squelch any outside competition.

Noam Chomsky said it the best many years ago...

In the US, there is basically one party - the business party. It has two factions, called Democrats and Republicans, which are somewhat different but carry out variations on the same policies. By and large, I am opposed to those policies. As is most of the population.

I certainly can't throw any support to either we have now. A nice fiscally responsible party could get my interest. One that actually understands good capitalism.

They learned their lesson with Perot. They don't want anyone else coming to the party.

That was happening long before Perot...He had the ready cash to attain ballot status.

Yes but they did more since too.

Said it before and Ill say it again, The Democrats and the Republicans are the flip side of the same coin, Ever notice, No matter which party is in control nothing changes. Trump I believe is the first third party President we have had. That is why he is getting so much resistance.
