Trump's claims to Venezuelan oil are part of broader 'resource imperialism', experts say

There was no hard data there.

Well, a MAGA stiffy, perhaps.

This is hard data, you MAGA useful idiot. Only three or four years ago the price was miles lower, according to your metric.

Try again. You're moving the goal posts.

You claim in both posts of yours #88 and #92 in this thread prices were lower a year ago. Now you say 3-4 years.

#88 = "You can't even research average US pump prices compared to a year ago."

#92 = "Nor are they able to compare prices a year ago, when that conflicts with the narrative they're slurping"

The oil in Venezuela is heavy, thick crude with metals and sulphur.....meaning its somewhat useful but not as high priced as light sweet Middle Eastern crude. (Too much refining needed)

Plus the oil infrastructure needed to collect and refine has been gone and is in complete disrepair. China was about to modernize and take the oil for free.....Maduro being arrested halts that deal.

My key phrase is "to maintain dominance" which will not happen in VZ.

After a transition back to democracy, the US should let VZ govern itself, which disproves the "imperialism" claim.
Haven’t you been paying attention this last year? Trump has already been using government power to unilaterally exert significant influence on other countries specifically in the western hemisphere.

As colonialism continued to collapse, Venezuela nationalized all of its natural resources, including oil reserves.
Now Trump claims that the US has had its oil “stolen” there. In other words, he acknowledges himself as a descendant and follower of the colonizers. Without any sugarcoating.

We spend at least that much on waste, fraud, and abuse every 3 months. Kinda chump change in all reality.

The oil is low value....
But together they can go far for reconstruction and infrastructure. (Desperately needed)

Venezuela is not part of the United States, and this is confirmed by international agreements.
But Trump says that the United States will control it.

Taiwan is part of China, and this is also confirmed by international agreements.
But China is not allowed to control Taiwan...
Something doesn't add up here...

Critics compare offensive to Iraq war, citing familiar mix of regime-change rhetoric, security pretexts and oil interests

‘Trump’s recent claims that the US should keep Venezuelan oil from seized tankers are part of a broader belief in rightwing “resource imperialism”, experts say.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has escalated pressure on Venezuela, invoking drug-trafficking claims. This month, the US intercepted two tankers carrying Venezuelan oil and began pursuing a third, while intensifying its campaign against the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

Critics have compared the offensive to the Iraq war, citing a familiar mix of regime-change rhetoric, security pretexts and oil interests. This month, the Trump administration labeled fentanyl – which it says flows from Venezuela – a “weapon of mass destruction”.’

Security, oil, and drug-trafficking claims are of course a lie.

This is Trump’s pathetic attempt to deflect from a failing economy, the Epstein debacle, and his incompetent, chaotic regime.

And Congressional Republicans are complicit, refusing to restrict Trump’s lawless aggression in the region.
I just said on another thread

a. Bush started this when he invaded Iraq. After that, what could we say to Russia when they invaded Ukraine? And what can we say if China takes Taiwan?

b. This is absolutely imperialism. But don't blame Trump. Blame Bush. Now that it's happening, should the USA sit by and watch China and Russia do it or should we do some ourselves?

Imperialism is the policy or practice of extending a nation's power and influence over foreign territories, often through direct territorial conquest or by establishing political and economic control, motivated by desires for wealth, resources, markets, or perceived cultural superiority, leading to profound transformations, exploitation, cultural clashes, and new global power dynamics. It involves both "hard power" (military force) and "soft power" (cultural influence) and can manifest as formal empires or indirect control, distinct from but often overlapping with colonialism.
