US warships often have to deal with approaching unknown aircraft in international waters and determining if they're hostile. Shoot first and ask questions later may be Trump's philosophy but it certainly would not be the Navy's.

No head of state in his right mind would want to engage in a war that would destroy the homeland. As long as there is an exceptionable exit, war can be averted. One of those is an attack on a member of a mutual defense pack in which each nation agrees that an attack on the other nation(s) will be regarded as an attack on their homeland. To break such an agreement cast doubt on every agreement that country has made. Russia would have to respond.
