Ok, so like there's a bunch of containers ships that are having a hard time getting unloaded along our coast, right? The supply chain is causing some woe's. I think we can all agree on that. Maybe not to the extent. But the fact that there is a back up means that we are importing way more than we're exporting.
And when we do that, it means we have less manufacturing jobs.

Let's say for example, Trump got his way and taxed TF out of imports. So much so that it equaled the amount of the final sale price of American goods. Americans would be forced to spend more for the Chinese crap. Or buy American products.
Buying American products means more jobs for Americans. It means more money staying in America.
Economics 101:

It's sound economics in an ideal world but there are some very obvious flaws to point out. First of all, the tariffs on China imports would hurt Americans who can't afford to buy the much higher priced goods made in America. And then, you have ruled out wage increases that would allow them to buy American made.

China produces what you refer to as 'crap' for foreign markets as well as their domestic marketplace, but they're also now producing the world's best in the electric car market.

In a capitalist free and fair trade market, the onus is on America to compete and no amount of tariffs and unfair trade practices can level the playing field for America.

In order to American goods to compete with Chinese made goods, the Americans producing the goods will need to be paid $10 an hour to allow the goods to be affordable. Or more correctly, much, much less than $10!

Can you revise your economics 101 so that the huge gap I've pointed out can be narrowed?
But too, in fairness to your theories, you're absolutely right that American wages for producers of goods that compete with China's goods, certainly can't be raised to $15 from $10!

Kudos to you for introducing a worthwhile conversation!

p.s.- If this topic can get legs, I'll be introducing ideas on necessary adjustments to capitalism, that would bring American made goods closer to being competitively priced.

If Trump had been given the time and support of the American people, as in "buying American products," more American manufacturing would've opened up here. And there would less of a backlog in our ports for foreign products.
Instead of all those cargo ships out there, there would be more semi's on our roads coming from American manufacturers.

One of the reasons why there's a shortage of truckers in this country, is because a LOT of them don't want to deal with BS they have to go through at the ports. Stupid security checks and BS permits they have to get. Not to mention having to wait an entire day or more, just get that container loaded and leave the port.
Been there, done that. It was a waste of time, for the simple fact that I could've just picked up at some American company, and hauled it. Why TF waste a whole day getting in and out of a port, when you can spend a couple of hours at an American plant? Miles are money. Sitting at a port all day isn't making money.

A shortcut that goes just above THE largest aquafer in the USA. That goes from the Dakota's down into Texas and New Mexico. One that millions of people drink out of, ranchers water their livestock from and farmers irrigate their gardens from.

Economics 101: More money staying in America, means less money the government has to borrow from the Fed, to maintain the economy. Which means that not only the money we have to pay back to the fed keeps from growing, but also the interest.
Which means the value of the USD would stay about the same for many more years than it is now. As in $10hr being a poverty wage, wouldn't turn into $15hr being a poverty wage within 5 years.
Plus, the economical impact of local markets would be better.

For the record, a trade war with China used to be something that the democrats would support, back when the democrats stood for the American working class. Now, the democrats care more about tranny rights, than the American working class.

So corporations can manufacture a lot cheaper and sell a lot cheaper. Therefore they sell more. Which means they make even more money than American manufacturer.
