Several years ago, a birthday party was held for a late Republican representative by the name of Strom Thurmond. Senator Trent Lott proposed a toast at this private party. He said "Strom, if you were elected President, our country would be better off today" or something to that effect.

The liberals and media went nuts on that comment because Strom held very racist and segregationist views early on in his career. He aborted those issues when he left the Democrat party to join the Republicans.
