Let's not forget why Trump was impeached for a second time
Ten
Republican representatives voted for the second impeachment, the most pro-impeachment votes ever from a president's party. This was also the first presidential impeachment in which the majority
caucus voted unanimously for impeachment.
The
House of Representatives of the
117th U.S. Congress adopted one
article of impeachment against Trump of "
incitement of insurrection", stating that he had incited the
January 6 attack of the
U.S. Capitol. These events were preceded by
attempts by Trump to overturn the
2020 presidential election, as well as his pushing of
voter fraud conspiracy theories
on his social media channels before, during, and after the election. Nevertheless, a House majority, including
Republican Adam Kinzinger, passed a resolution urging Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment.
At the beginning of the trial,
Senator Rand Paul forced a vote to dismiss the impeachment charge on the basis that it was
unconstitutional to try a former president
At the conclusion of the trial, the Senate voted 57–43 to convict Trump of inciting insurrection, falling 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority required by the
Constitution, and Trump was therefore acquitted. Seven Republican senators joined all Democratic and independent senators in voting to convict Trump, the largest bipartisan vote for an impeachment conviction of a U.S. president or former U.S. president. After the vote on the acquittal,
Mitch McConnell said it is no doubt that Trump is practically and morally responsible for inciting the events at the Capitol but he voted against conviction due to his interpretation of the United States Constitution.
Because he wasn't still the president. That was Mitch's reasoning for acquitting. Rand Paul too. But they also say he's responsible
