That the GOP nominee is considering withdrawing from the debates is great news for the Democrats. It underscores everything that was said about Drumpf.

In 1984, Reagan had an insurmountable lead over Mondale. The only thing and I mean the only thing outside of setting the White House on fire that could stymie his landslide was getting beaten soundly in the debates. He lost the first debate pretty badly but in the next debate he righted the ship. To even take the stage was the biggest gamble of his candidacy that year. Still; he did it. And, like the GOP of today, Reagan held no warm place in his heart for most of the media.

In 1992, Ross Perot was on the stage with Clinton and Bush 41. Clearly, Perot was going to draw more Bush riders away from the GOP nominee than that of the DNC. Bush didn't utter a word about the "injustice".

And now we come to 2016. A plead for "fairness" Trump style means what, excactly? He's poisoned the well time and again. He's called the press "scum" so if it's going to be someone from the press (as it has been in the past), it will be "scum" moderating the debates.

My guess is that he won't avoid the debates, that he believes that his standard wild hyperbole, arm-waving and vague platitudes will win him the day.

Remember - this isn't new for him, this is the way he has been all his life. He just mauls people with the force of his personality, the ultimate bull in the china shop. He has virtually no self-awareness and really does think people are buying everything he's saying.

He's certainly a fascinating psychological study.
