My first instinct was that this was all a big bluff to obtain better terms in the USMCA renegotiation that occurs in a year. He will delay again in April and just keep the merry-go-round going.

Lutnick was on TV yesterday saying "there won't be any pauses or anything like that". but I wasn't convinced at all, he is not a good liar, the guy sounds like a used car salesman every time he speaks lol. I imagine Canada will be next to receive a pause, at least on energy products.

It would take some serious balls to apply tariffs for a year and demand companies come back. There is too much pressure coming to him and many industries will fund the resistance to these tariffs. They certainly caught me off guard when he announced them. It's always to try and squeeze someone lol, I don't think it will work in this instance but I've been wrong before, he is always unpredictable

Sounds like a temporary pause to me.

The great dealmaker.

They called his bluff.

What an embarrassment.
The only way to win such a war is how he is operating with the China tariffs. I've never seen tariffs applied and removed so often in my life, it doesn't allow for business planning.

In the end, he will capitulate. I'm not even sure he can obtain better terms in the USMCA now as he appears uncommitted.

Look, I love Trumps confrontation of China and your border, that is a big deal for people like me. I'm just not sure he understands how to handle the heat that people place on industries in red states. If he would have offered say, 50% of tariff revenue to be distributed to industries impacted he might have been able to obtain buy in.

China is far easier to beat in such a trade war than Mexico or Canada, that's my take on it all.

All of this said, I am quite convinced that reciprocal tariffs will be coming to all countries, it's far easier to sell to Americans and even businesses won't be able to argue against them.

He has paused it three times now I believe. This is all delay until they actually figure it out. I presumed he wasn't going to keep these on for longer than a week

This isn't good for business. How can business' make hiring and investment decisions with this guy reaking havoc on business?

They provided the information and action he requested of them. They provided some evidence, I haven't seen it, that they have stepped up their efforts against the Terrorists in their nation. The tariffs haven't ended, just suspended until Apr. 2nd.

Of course, if he didn't bend the left would say he lied about the goal post set for them, and now that he has bent a touch, the left will say, "See, he was bluffing".

So, what Trump needs to do is stay the course and tell the the lunitic fringe on the left to GF themeslves.

How long until trump creates a nasty nickname for her?
It’s what trump does BEST.

From a Canadian POV, we need to keep the tariffs on until we have divesified our trade away from the US and mostly to China and the other Brics countries.
Trump needs to learn that there are consequences to his country's wellbeing as a result of his foolish decisions.

I don't know, but he could really do immense damage to the Canadian economy if he wanted and he would get all of his terms. It's not easy though and his Party will always be pressured to convince Trump otherwise.

Nations are cheating, it isn't just via tariffs though I assure you.
