Updates to that bill requiring the ethics pledge were introduced by Trump ally Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, and signed into law by Trump himself in March 2020. The deadline was October 1. It was expected that making the pledge would be a common practice adhered to by all presidential hopefuls. Another example of how we have always been able to assume our elected leaders would behave in an ethical way. Obviously, trump has chosen to not limit himself to ethical behavior. The transition of presidents involves informing the new, incoming president and his transition team of top-secret information, so they will be ready on day one. Obviously, trump is not interested in any restrictions on his ethics as president, so he still ignores the law.
