Taiwan is a friend and a trading partner. There is no reason Trump shouldn't talk to this independent country's President.

Trump is correct when he says the US sells billions of dollars of Military equipment to Taiwan but his actions clearly show his lack of understanding of both US policy toward China and of how diplomacy works.

Bottom line, Trump needs to get himself a Secretary of State who understands foreign policy and diplomatic relations or he's going get this country in a lot of trouble real fast.

If Trump had any understanding of the Chinese, he would know that you can not bully, intimidate, or insult them and expect to negotiate with them. It just doesn't work that way. Hardliners in the Chinese government don't give a damn about US trade. In fact, if it disappeared tomorrow, many would be overjoyed. Xi Jinping has to walk a very fine line when dealing with the US. Trump's saber rattling just makes negotiations that much harder.

China exports 2.2 trillion dollars in goods. Only 18% goes to the US. Although any restriction of trade would hurt both countries, China with it's iron-fisted control of the country would be far better able to deal with it than the US.

You're almost right, but China would not be able to deal with it better. China's domestic market is still in its infancy, and being so dependent on exports puts them in the more precarious position in any theoretical trade war.

As the US has come closer to China economically, Chinese relations with North Korea has cooled as have the massive arm shipments to Iran and Syria, as well as military activity in the South China Sea. Cooling relations with the US could easily result in China turning up the heat in these areas.
