Because the Soviet Union and later China/Russia wouldn't allow it. And they, of course, have their own nuclear deterrents. Don't you find it a little weird that whenever we negotiate with the Norks, the goal is always to get them to give up their nukes? The one weapon they have that keeps the US at bay is the one we want them to give up.

Because they were allied, and ultimately had an obligation to protect one another. Same reason Russia won't invade the Baltic states. Nuclear umbrella. It's always been about nukes.

Oh, he has command experience. You remember those pictures of detainees at Gitmo being subject to abuse? He was a platoon leader, probably the 84th Troop Command but I need to do more research. He was an infantry platoon leader in Iraq where he did see action. He became a captain in 2012 and went to Afghanistan where he was a senior counter insurgency trainer. How did that turn out? NOT SO GOOD.

He has no senior military or national security experience. I really don't know if he could qualify for an even midlevel security clearance, but apparently, Trump is going to hand those things out without an FBI review. Quite frightening.

He seems like a likeable and articulate guy but picking a N.G. Major to run the Defense Dept. is pretty strange. A General has a global view of the Military but a N.G. Major has only his own narrow experience to base critical decisions about the future of the United States Military. Frankly I think he is way out of his depth. While I'm at it I always thought of Mike Huckabee as a cheap huckster using his political experience to sell cheap junk that pretends to give a good night sleep but I hope I'm wrong.
