Well it's important (I think) to recognize that his threats have had no effect on the Iranians, they didn't attend any meeting and the ball was in trump's court to follow up on his threats, he didn't and the Iranians will not see that as a sign of strength - IMHO.

"... convince Iran to back off?" Iran didn't start the war. They've been in defensive mode from the moment Israel and Trump started the bombing campaign. Maybe other governments should convince Trump to "back off."

The blockade does not require constant missiles, less risk to soldiers, and, is more effective in forcing a deal plus citizens outrage. With China sending a ship with missile producing chemicals Trump should hit them with a tariff. The Iranian regime requires fear and persecution to control their citizens, just as.Communists do. They employ Afghans and others outside the country to keep people in line since their own citizens are not backing the regime. Iranians do not want their Islamic overlords, the want freedom. The blockade will achieve this without risk or use of weapons. NO ships must be allowed into Iran and their regime will eventually fall.
