We know what at least part of Trump's strategy is, the blockade of Iran's ports which is preventing Iran from selling oil, its only source of foreign currency, and this will destroy Iran's economy in time, but this will take too long, so I'm guessing Trump thinks he sees conflicts among the leaders he can exploit.

Pakistan said that there are volcanic explosions between the Iran negotiators, so Iran can't agree on the path forward, so Trump is giving them some breathing room to come to their senses.

Time is important. On May 29 his 90 days of operating without Congressional approval is up under the War Powers Act, and the Democrats will try to block funding for continuing the war.

I don't think Trump is going to wait that long. The Iranians know they have an ally in the Democratic Party and Trump knows that too. So, I think Trump will take significant military action against Iran and blame the democrats if they force him to withdraw. "We had 'em on the run but the democrats made us stop".
