How would this achieve the free flow of commerce through to Strait?
In my opinion it was a mistake to agree to a ceasefire and a mistake to try to reach a deal with the current regime. Instead, the US should have told the ayatollahs, behave responsibly in the Strait of Hormuz or we will take it away from you, and if the ayatollahs don't comply, begin blowing up their ports and supporting infrastructure with 20 miles of the coast. This will prevent them from sustaining any elements of their navy that may remain and without function ports, the ayatollahs will not be able to engage in seaborne commerce. Then invite them to talks about terms under which they will be allowed access to the Gulf.
