Brazilās ex-president Bolsonaro arrested to prevent āattempted escape,ā court says
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was arrested on Saturday over concerns he was plotting to escape house arrest after he took a soldering iron to his ankle bracelet, authorities said.
The arrest at his home in BrasĆlia, just days before he was due to begin a prison sentence for leading a coup attempt, is another setback for Bolsonaro, whose prosecution has been heavily criticized by the Trump administration.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Saturday on X the US was āgravely concernedā about Bolsonaroās arrest, which he called āprovocative and unnecessaryā in a post on X.
Landau criticized Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the Brazilian Supreme Court judge overseeing the case, accusing him of āflouting traditional norms of judicial restraintā and bringing the court into disrepute. āThere is nothing more dangerous to democracy than a judge who knows no limits on his power.ā
Was he planning on going to Mar-a-Lago?
