However, by the time the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, farmland of The Ukraine was so depleted from over-farming that the new government placed a moratorium sale of Ukranian farmland for 20 years.

That moratorium ended last year but Ukraine law forbids the sale of farmland to foreigners.

Getting their hands on the most productive farmland in Europe, now replenished after a 20 year fallow period, would be a significant inducement.

The Ukraine is #7 in wheat production.
Russia is #3, well ahead of the US.
If you add Russia and Ukraine you get Russia from #3 to #2 and double the US wheat production.
Ukraine is about the size of TX with good very productive farmland.
Don't know if that's the only reason why Putin invaded, but Ukraine is a breadbasket with 40m people.
