We can't make it as cheaply because we pay a first world living wage. We have first world employee protections. We have first world employee insurance.
You can't have it both ways.
I'd rather pay more so that Bubba, Laquan and Paco get a good paycheck so they can buy a home that my trucks will haul the materials that the carpenters and roofers will use to construct those homes, that Michelle and Latisha will sell, that Isabelle and Hong will process the loans for, then go across the street and buy sushi that Mi Ling makes.
Savvy?
Once it goes to China, for all intents and purposes, it's gone, and that wealth is circulating in another countries economic terrarium.
I think we are about 30 years too late, to bring it all back....and even if brought back, it will likely be automated and computer run and won't benefit manufacturing people with high paying jobs.
Though as you mentioned, other jobs like truckers could be increased by it....not enough to make a difference imo, because they already move the goods across the country from a west coast port, so moving it from a factory in the USA simply replaces the port movement.... If even that.
And then we face all the high paying port jobs will be eliminated without the China and Asian/Indonesian hordes of cheap goods coming in...those very good paying jobs at the ports throughout the USA gone....and there are a gazillion truckers making good money running from those ports....all could be drastically cut.... While giving an automated robot a job?
it's just been too long of free trade, where other industries developed here and prospered here to cut it off at this point, imo
And so many small businesses rely on the very cheap goods from China for their businesses like Stationary Shops, Souvenir Shops, Fireworks Markets, fabric shops, gadget shops, where US Made products are too expensive for them to make a profit....tariffs are killing all of these businesses....mostly of 1 or 2 persons selling on Etsy, Ebay, Amazon.... And those are selling platforms created because of the imported cheap goods, that could also be hurt...
And just because it is brought back, many components of their manufacturing widget, are made in a foreign country.... So called free trade after the past 30 years is far and wide now.
And in the 30 years of off shoring our manufacturing, those who created this plan and their conspirator businesses here, were able to keep our pay lower and their payroll expense lower, because we were kept just hitting the edge of happy with all the cheap goods....so our pay is so much lower than it needs to be, to afford USA made goods....we've also have been trained to expect cheap goods...
This whole trade and tariff thing is deeper than a pie....there are so many aspects of USA living that took the past 40 years of free trade to work through,
it can't change with a flip of a switch, overnight....it'll take decades of suffering, before it gets better, if ever.
That being said, maybe our approach should be on higher priced goods being brought home, and tech type goods that have proprietary features that we don't want the Chinese to steal, and key necessities made at home, like our medicines, or military stuff....
These are areas where there is ability to pay quality hands, to make their quality goods.
