Many struggled to learn English and settled into Little Italy, Chinatown, Jewish or German communities

It was the second generation that embraced the culture

They still assimilated. They still learned English. With all of those Catholic and Jewish Europeans flooding US shores in search of better opportunities and more freedoms, I have yet to see or hear of any push or resistance to have their own Religious Law usurp US Law. Contrast that to today where sharia law is being debated as an alternative or higher law vs US Law.
