The money was paid out of personal funds. The President cannot be compelled to release his tax returns. Period. The NEXT President, maybe. The President already files an extensive financial disclosure that gives Congress everything they need, and is actually more comprehensive than the disclosures that Congress-people themselves have to file.

Congress can request anyone's tax returns from the Commissioner of the IRS - who works for Trump, but the request could be denied on privacy grounds, particularly in the absence of any indication of crime or tax evasion.

Trump's tax returns are audited every year. Have been for a long time. As for Congress looking into tax evasion...nonsense.

As Mr. Cohen stated last week, in what might have been his only truthful statement, Trump's fear is that if his tax returns are made public, the Leftists in Congress (and the non-Fox Media) will unleash an army of forensic accountants and lawyers, who will sift through them to find ANYTHING THAT CAN BE USED TO MAKE THE PRESIDENT LOOK BAD. It's not really any concern about criminal wrongdoing, but just the avoidance of a [continued] circus.

The only question at this point is, how hard will the President push back? Will be tell them all to go fuck themselves and fight it out in Court (where he will win), or just dribble out documents that don't prove anything, giving the illusion of cooperation. Or send them so much paper they can't deal with it.

As for his minions, they would be crazy to cooperate or testify in any way.
