Maybe because only Jews think they're entitled to land their ancestors conquered thousands of years ago. Historically speaking, the Land of Israel extended from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River. Today's demographics show about 5 million Jews and 6 million non-Jews living on that land. Israel seems to be facing a choice between existing as a Jewish State or a democratic state or an apartheid state...?

From the official US standpoint, it wasn't Islamic Fundamentalism that was the "problem" during the 1950s, it was secular Arab nationalists, like Egypt's Nasser, who had the crazy idea Arab oil belonged to Arabs. Religious Fundamentalists in that part of the world were funded by the US and other western elites to ensure the Nationalists did not pose a long-term problem to western imperial interests.
