If corporations were not able to use their great wealth and power to influence politics, and therefore government, their threat to democracy and freedom would be nearly insignificant.

Unfortunately over time they have used their wealth to ensure themselves more and more power over government which has resulted in less freedom for all So actually we have significant problems with government AND corporations. Corporations have become our government by proxy.
Politicians are corporate employees by proxy.
