I think it refers to coming out and accepting oneself and others. The intent is to support those who cannot
help being as they are and being rejected by society if this isn't something they can choose or change.

I think "pride" becomes detrimental when it involves justification to insult, demean or reject others as inferior.

Also, the type of people who can change their orientation is different.
Why aren't we just as "proud" for former gays who come out and admit they used to identify
as homosexual but now they don't.

They could be proud of being honest, I will give them that, but that is't the "PRIDE" that gays are spouting off about. And yeah, I AM outraged about the fact that the rainbow insignia that I wore on my Army National Guard uniform, and name of my unit (the 42nd Infantry Division) is smeared and tarnished by these sex pervert creeps using it to identify themselves, and their mental aberration.

In 1964, I joined the New York Army National Guard. My National Guard unit was/is part of the army's 42nd Infantry Division (AKA the "rainbow division). The logo is the rainbow, and has been since World War I. During the 60s, when I wore this rainbow patch on my uniform, there was no thought about rainbows being connected to gays. That came about much later in 1978, when it was a flag designed by San Francisco artist, Gilbert Baker.

Thanks to him, millions of Army 42nd Infantry Division soldiers now must endure the insult of their 99 year old emblem, now being associated with gays. The soldiers who fought in the 42nd Infantry in World Wars 1 & II must be rolling in their graves to see their emblem being tarnished in this way. The rainbow name and insignia was created 99 years ago for the New York Army National Guard, in 1917 (61 years before it became a gay symbol). It got its name when Lt. Colonel Douglas MacArthur said the new army division would "stretch over the whole country like a rainbow."
