Pennsylvania, a state that had not been taken by a GOP presidential candidate since 1988 has undergone a demographic shift. That is the thousands of former residents of New Jersey, New York, Maryland who left those states to escape the higher taxes.
People who object to high taxes tend to vote GOP. This population shift may have contributed to an upsurge in votes for Trump.
Additionally and this is born out by exit polls, Trump took the vote of mainly Caucasian blue collar and middle class who do not have 4 year college degrees.
These people voted in their own self interest as opposed to the 2008 and 2012 elections, many middle class especially suburban Caucasians voted for Obama out of political correctness.
