When I heard Trump wanted to be President I thought "Ya right. Whatever", I couldn't think of any case where I would vote for the guy.
His preliminary popularity must be due to his TV image. People believe his "You're fired" slogan, and his successful business man reputation. He does have the money and success to back it up.
Rand Paul is the best candidate for America, but unfortunately the game of politics is a skill. The media tore down Rand Paul. They keyed on his negative military stance and constantly had him on the defensive. every time I saw Rand Paul on TV he was defending himself. The media had him looking like a little kid. Well, hopefully Rand Paul learns from his mistakes and makes a come-back in the future.
Rubio and Cruz , although very conservative sounding, had similar Republican speeches to what we've heard in the past.
Trump, on the other hand, come out with a loud and clear plan of action, some of it he was told would not make him popular with the Republicans. By Trump broadcasting his agenda, while the other candidates were busy defending themselves, Trump dominates the whole campaign. Any candidate who changed their rhetoric and became agenda driven, would have sounded like they were copying Trump.
Trump also beat his competitors with the oldest political trick in the book, positive attitude. He tells us HE WILL do this and that, while other candidates seemed to have taken a "we'll stand true while we lose" approach.
------------
After the first debate when Trump emerges as the clear leader, The left-wing media tells the Republican candidates they better attack Trump because he's winning. Trump reduced himself to bickering too, but he corrected himself. The other Republican candidates took the bait hook-line-and-sinker. The last days of the race, Rubio and then Cruz were doing nothing but crying about Trump winning. It was over.
I really have to wonder what the Republican political advisors are telling candidates these days. I would have told Cruz to shut his mouth about Trump. I believe his popularity would have increased.
Another important issue about Trump is, his advisors seem to be working for him. I've never seen a politician recognize his faults and correct himself so fast. Maybe it's the personal money that keeps the advisors doing their job as opposed to advisors paid for by some political machine.
The last "debate" became a shooting gallery for the media to tear down Trump. Trump wisely said he wasn't doing anymore debates.

We have plenty of wealthy politicians with college education, where does it guess us? nowhere.
The media, including the "conservative" Fox News, tried to use the last debate to stop Trump and make him look like a hypocrite. What we learned about Trump is he seems to be very aware of everything that goers on in his businesses. He had good answers for everything, and the media was unable to blindside him.
The media at the debate even tried criticize Trump over a poor rating on a business, Trump had his people get a current rating fro m the BBB and hand it to the media, who didn't want to mention the correction.
We have a dishonest media, but with Trump we see an amazing strategy. When a member of the media says something false, Trump goes after them and names them by name. A member of the media who says something that is completely false, places his reputation at risk. Brilliant.
Trump's run-away popularity in regard to his hardline position against illegal immigration is proof that the theory of the Democrat and GOP leadership is wrong, that the Republican should pander to Hispanics and elect someone who can "reach across the isle", in other words, allow the Democrats to pass laws that they want.
Trump's position on tariffs seemed to have exposed his #1 competitor , Ted Cruz, of his lack of understanding of government. I think we have to question how prepared Cruz was to be President.

* Trump seems to have picked up the support of Tea Party individuals.
* Trump seems to have won support over people who were upset over Obamacare and were ignored by the government.
* Currently Republican voters are sick of Republican candidates who don't practice what they preach.
* Trump has reactivated topics the Democrats and the GOP tried to bury, illegal immigration and sending jobs to China, apparently voters weren't done with those issues.
* Trump has capitalized on the anti-PC sentiment
* Trump seems to have actually employed leadership skills learned in business.
* Trump's business skills seem to have turned him into a naturally shrewd politician. He seems to be out-pacing our top politicians (perhaps not very surprising)
* Trump has tapped into the desire of Americans to win again, and stay #1 in many issues
