About 20 years ago I had a terrible house fire. During the rebuilding process I went to live with my sister. I figured I'd rather she get the insurance money instead of some hotel.

My niece came home after school terribly upset. I was living in the basement but heard the yelling upstairs. Apparently the boy down the street threatened to beat up my niece over some dispute. These were not 8 year olds, they were in their mid teens.

I thought to myself WTF happened to this country? Boy threatening to beat up a girl in a fist fight? Was I in a coma and missed a few generations or something? If a boy ever said he was going to beat up a girl when I was a teen, we other guys would have kicked the shit out of him for even suggesting that. What kind of sissy would even think of that? Where do these kids get these ideas from?

A few weeks later I was still in the basement channel surfing. I kept running across these adventure shows where they had these hot chicks beating the hell out of these muscular 280 bad guys. Then it dawned on me. This is where these kids get the idea that a girl is perfectly capable of fighting a larger much stronger male.

Men and women are not equals; never have been and never will. Men are superior to women in some ways and women superior to males in other ways. We are built different, think differently, have different instincts and abilities. It's why their men get bored clothes shopping and women get bored with us at the hardware store or Home Depot. We are different.

As for how men used to see women, we used to put women on a pedestal. We would go to the passenger side to open and close the car door for women. If a woman left a dinner table at a restaurant, the men would stand up in respect. Entering a building the men would hold the door open for the woman and allow her to enter first. If a woman entered a standing room only bus, several men would jump up and offer their seat to her immediately. That's how we treated women back then. And until this modern day, I never enter a building before a woman. I still hold the door open for her.

Putting people on a pedestal does not mean what you think it means. You treat them as objects to be admired and desired, rather than intelligent, capable and independent individuals. While men may have opened a car door, they would also exclude them from making any important financial decision. Men may have given them a seat on a bus, they'd also prevent them from advancing their careers. Meaningless gestures do not make up for the lack of respect for their capabilities and taking away opportunities for advancement in society.

I don't know some of those kids with dad at home may have it pretty good. There was a time my father took a four year contract working for the government out west. He got 5 weeks vacation. My mom would go back east with my brother and sister. My father and I had 5 weeks to live like savages. Hunting, fishing, golf,baseball, basketball the beach. We never cleaned the house. We were never there to make it dirty. Dad was pretty much no blood no foul. My mother on the other hand there was no pleasing her as far as I was concerned. That woman drove nuts. Thise five weeks for those four years were probably the happiest of my life!
