The South Is Essentially A Solid, Grim Block Of Poverty

Come on down to the South, left-winged Prius-driving pussies.
We'll show ya'll a good time.

Virginia is a great state (especially Southeast Virginia) , there are plenty of people who drive Smart Cars, Prius, and Versa down here.

You guys stopped being the South when you got some money. Y'all elect dem senators. Sutherners don' do that. Governors too. What the hell's wrong with y'all? That's like having sex with satan. It might be lively, but it's wrong and against God. (-:

It's probably because of all of us Northern transplants living down here. :)

I will add that I voted for Kaine(D) over Kilgore(R), McDonnell(R) over Deeds (D) and Sarvis(L) over McAuliffe(D) and Cuccinelli (R).

Ahhh I get it the policies dont , the politicians dont matter, what they stand for doesnt matter...The people there determine the pay and taxes (pssst black people)

There possibly a point here:

Obama's policies don't make any difference to blacks, almost all of whom live in the Southern USA and 99% of them voted for him.

The Great Recession and Not-So-Great Recovery have been bad news for most Americans, but some people have suffered more than others. We call those people "Southerners."

North Carolina and a handful of other Southern U.S. states saw the biggest increases in the number of people living in what are known as "poverty areas" between 2000 and 2010, according to a new Census Bureau report. Poverty areas are places where more than 20 percent of the people live below the federal poverty line, which varies by family size. For a family of four, the poverty line in most states is an annual income of $23,850.

Today, 25.7 percent of all Americans live in such areas, up from 18.1 percent in 2000, according to the report. Having a quarter of the nation living this way is a problem: Poverty areas are typically marked by "higher crime rates, poor housing conditions, and fewer job opportunities," the report points out.

People continue to vote contrary to their best interests.

Is the data adjusted for regional cost of living?

Actually you have proven you don't get much of anything!

Black people are nothing more than pawns for the DNC now as the Hispanic population is the second largest minority in the US.

Get ready to take a back seat to them.

Although I am sure you will be a good little far left drone and vote (D) now matter how bad your far left masters treat you.

people continue to vote contrary to their best interests.

what the “southern strategy” essentially does is it identified the fact that african americans were voting for democrats, therefore republicans decided they would make white voters more aware of this fact in hopes of driving the “white vote” towards the republican party.

Doubt me? LetÂ’s look at a comment from a 1970′s interview in the new york times with richard nixonÂ’s political strategist:

“from now on, the republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the negro vote and they don’t need any more than that…but republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the voting rights act. The more negroes who register as democrats in the south, the sooner the negrophobe whites will quit the democrats and become republicans. That’s where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local democrats.”

essentially it was the republican party saying, “look, blacks are voting for democrats so you white people need to vote for republicans—the party that will represent whites and oppose the blacks.”

what year is it again?

They sure do. Places like Detroit for example.

Do you deny that the rich today use racism, god, gays & guns to divide us?

People who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.

We had "reconstruction" and carpetbaggers inflicted on us. What excuse does NY, MI, and CA, have?

A wealthy Hell-hole is still a Hell-hole.

They still haven't recovered from the ass-beating the North handed them.

We weren't a hell hole. In fact Michigan was paradise for how many decades? I was watching a show on the Big 3 back in the 50's. I'm going to make up the number because I can't remember but it was like 50,000 people worked under one roof. They compared how many Americans worked for the Big 3 back then compared to today.

The Big 3 made profits and the workers made a decent wage. In fact they made a great wage. Profit sharing, overtime, free healthcare, sick days, vacation days, pensions, etc.

Today the GOP and corporations sent all those jobs overseas for the cheap labor. How much has that brought the price of cars down? Nothing? Exactly. All those savings are going to the CEO and Shareholders. But in America, you don't get to do business here unless you also benefit our society. So if you are going to manufacture overseas, you have to pay a tariff to ship that shit into the country. But that no longer happens. In fact the GOP gave the corporations going overseas tax breaks to help them move. The rich/GOP don't care about Americans anymore. It's a global economy and we are the most expensive labor.

We don't want to make everything at home but do we want to make nothing here? And do we really want all those unskilled labor making only $10 hr. while the CEO makes $30 million a year? Forget what is right or fair. What works?

Anyways, I'm sorry you think America and your government are bad things. Maybe you should move to Mexico? And you southern fools need to stop letting the rich manipulate you with bullshit wedge issues like god, gays, guns and racism. You are voting against your own best financial interests. Stop doing that.

"We're just celebrating our culture." = butt-hurt we lost our slaves.

They have nothing but the Republicans to blame. Align together, repeal the newest Jim Crow laws and VOTE them out of office. With determination, it can be done.

There aren't any Jim Crow laws. So good luck trying to repeal them.

Why do you insist on living in the past rather than learning from it to address current problems.

Today I learned that politicians dont matter but the entire reason the south is poor is because black people live there.

GOP 2016!

Poor minimum wage workers in the Northeast...

If you are a minimum wage worker, you're definitely better off in Arkansas than New York. See, it's not just about the arbitrary "federal poverty line". It's also about what you can buy with it. Seems the South may have more below the line but can more easily afford it.
