Are you afraid of artificial intelligence? It’s coming — and in some ways it’s already here. It’s going to become far more powerful, and it will fundamentally change our society and possibly the entire world. True, AI presents dangers, but it also offers enormous benefits. One advantage is that products made by robots could become so inexpensive that they dramatically raise everyone's standard of living. However, at the same time, AI could eliminate almost all jobs, which would force us to rethink our economic system.
I’m not opposed to capitalism, but I’m not married to it either. I favor it because it has historically provided a higher standard of living. But if it stops working, we will have to choose something else — some form of social system that can function when most people no longer have traditional jobs. The problem is that a large portion of the population may end up with nothing to do, and many will seek undesirable entertainment or even destructive criminal outlets. That could require more law enforcement and tighter social controls.
Even so, I believe AI will ultimately make the world a better place. Research driven by AI could eliminate paralysis, treat conditions like Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, and dementia, make organ transplants routine and accessible, and perhaps even double human life expectancy. The sky — and the bottom — is the limit. And there is no way to stop this development; it is inevitable. If we don’t pursue it, our adversaries will, and some of them are not forgiving. We would never want to fall under their control.
