We don't know what happens after death. We have seen folks who have been clinically dead come back with stories of floating, seeing dead relatives, etc.

IMO, what we believe is what happens to us after death. Jesus tried to tell us that.

Now that is a fascinating answer on this topic. I have ran into a lot of evidence that yes, what people believe about the afterlife can have an impact on what happens to them in the afterlife.

For example near death experiencer Dr. George Ritchie in 1943 was shown that the "Soul Sleep" doctrine can scare a near death experiencer into experiencing the afterlife as a dream, whereas a more objective person will report that thoughts and senses are increased in the afterlife.

If I remember correct Dr. George Ritchie was quite young at the time of his 1943 brush with death. His NDE account helped to get Dr. RAymond Moody interested in this topic.
