The Republican attempt to Make Slavery a Constitutional Right

Many "Republicans" in this forum are truly dishonest people.

The Corwin Amendment

The Corwin Amendment, also called the “Slavery Amendment,” was a constitutional amendment passed by Congress in 1861 but never ratified by the states that would have banned the federal government from abolishing the institution of slavery in the states where it existed at the time. Considering it a last-ditch effort to prevent the looming Civil War, supporters of the Corwin Amendment hoped it would prevent the southern states that had not already done so from seceding from the Union. Ironically, Abraham Lincoln did not oppose the measure.

The operative section of the Corwin Amendment states:

“No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.”

In referring to enslavement as “domestic institutions” and “persons held to labor or service,” rather than by the specific word “slavery,” the amendment reflects wording in the draft of the Constitution considered by delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which referred to enslaved people as “Person held to Service."

Senator William H. Seward and Representative Thomas Corwin introduced the Corwin Amendment, both were republicans.

Democrats had in their party platform at that time support for slavery, lying racist sack of shit.

This was 160 years ago. Since then, Democrats were the party of segregation, Jim Crow, the KKK, lynching, cross burning. But none of that matters to you because government handouts.

You're a trashy prostitute
The South used to vote democrat. Lincoln was the republican. Only the clueless and Causeless right wing appeal to ignorance and allege they are Right simply because they are on the right wing.
We aren’t talking about the same republucan and democratic parties in the 1800s .
The Gop has change in the past two decades from a party of science to a party delusional money and power grabbers.

From the angry, butt hurt screaming simpleton ... Contentless accusations are just spam

Lincoln is credited with "saving the Union" but the Union fell apart under his watch. Apparently Lincoln was so consumed with his own personal problems that he let the freaking Country slip into anarchy without raising a finger to stop it. We know Lincoln depended on fools and advisers who told him that the Civil War wouldn't last a single summer so he didn't give a damn. In fact he should have compromised and lied and cajoled and made promises that he couldn't keep. Anything to avoid the (modern estimate) of 750,000 casualties on both sides. The industrial revolution was underway and the cotton industry that slavery depended on was doomed. What if Corwin was smarter than Lincoln and his proposed Amendment to the Constitution was intended to delay the hostilities and offer a national debate in congress that would have lasted for a couple of years. What if Corwin could have prevented Lincoln's War?

Was NOT really a Republican initiative. And it was a horrible idea. It was Buchanan's REQUEST to CONGRESS to head off Civil War AFTER 5 or 7 states had already succeeded.. Buchanan was a Democrat and KNEW Lincoln's election was gonna be defined by Civil war over slavery and other issues..

Why can't we just discuss stuff without trying to score CURRENT political points? Situation at THAT time was already decided. The states in seccession didn't vote on it, never were gonna ratify it.

In fact -- Rhode Island and ILLINOIS were 2 of the only 3 states that did.. Now you tell me -- HOW DID R.Island and Illinois get punked to ratify the POS???? So much for the SOUTH being the problem in continuing slavery huh....

You have to consider that prior to Lincoln's War, congress was subservient to state's rights so the proposed Corwin amendment was just political showmanship. Probably Corwin instinctively knew it couldn't possibly pass but it was a political ploy designed to avoid war. If Lincoln showed the same instinct to avoid hostilities instead of encouraging them the Union might have been preserved without bloodshed.

There is no irony that Lincoln did not oppose the measure, he was in fact a racist and acknowledged the constitutionality of slavery in his first inaugural address.
I don't think that you could find a single person alive in 1860 who wasn't a racist by today's standards. Hell, I don't think you could find one in 1941 either. People like MLK and the freedom riders changed societal attitudes towards black Americans, unfortunately the conduct of some black Americans over the past decade are changing societal attitudes back.
This is a bs excuse that has no merit. There actually were whites alive then who were not racists.
Name them, I’ve never heard of any.

Let's examine some facts about the so called anti slavery republican past.

During that time there were 3 major factions in the republican party. Moderates, Conservative and Radical Republicans. The third group was called radicals because they believed blacks should be free and that blacks had right to equal treatment. The other 2 factions didn't believe that. It was the Radicals that forced the issue on slavery. Lincoln was a moderate. After slavery ended the conservatives began taking over the party.

That is not true. The concept of states rights was established by the decisions SCOTUS made during the civil rights cases. There was no excuse to make slavery a constitutional right. That would have been in violation of everything the constitution was suppose to stand for.

Were there any anti-slavery democrats? It seems that the only push against slavery came from Republicans.

First off, the democratic party then was full of conservatives. They are what the republican party is now. So all these dishonest attempts to blame todays democrats for slavery when todays republican party supports the memory of the pro slavery confederacy is rich.
