The Reprehensible Right: Judge rules against Florida on felons paying fines to vote

There would be a whole lot of people not voting if this applied to anyone that owed a late book fee from the library, back child support, etc etc.

Nobody's talking about delinquent library patrons or deadbeat dads. This is about convicted felons, who still have not yet fully paid their debt to society.

Oh? Really? It's about fines and fees. If you owe child support - you owe a debt. Sorry dude you can not vote.

Frankly - time served is sufficient. I don't believe for MOMENT you were going to agree with the ruling. Not with a statement like the above.

Sounds good to me! I had to raise my grandsons for many years thank to their deadbeat Dad.
Good for you (not meant sarcastically), that is sadly an all too common thing these days :(

If they have done their time and are no longer on probation I have no problem with it.

Florida's bill was attempting to redefine "doing their time" to stretch it to include payment of all fines and fees.

They will just start keeping them in jail or supervised probation for not paying their fines and fees.

Which disproportionately effects poor people and puts people in jail who do not need to be there.
If you cannot pay your fees and fines, you should stay on supervised probation, meaning you don't get right to vote back! It doesn't matter if you owe $5 or $5 million.

Nope. I disagree. If they serve the time, they have served the time.

In that case you are a fool. If someone owes a $5000 fine in addition to their crime, why let them off the hook for this? They should have just made the sentence longer.

Because those fees and fines often disproportionately hurt poor people. It should not also affect their ability to vote.

It was the United States Department of Justice's investigation into the Ferguson Police Department after an officer killed Michael Brown in 2014 that "awakened" the federal government and much of the general public to the burden of municipal fines and fees, issued for everything from traffic violations, to mismatched curtains, to court costs. When people can't afford to pay these fees, they end up with criminal warrants, drivers' license suspensions, and even end up in jail.

That is one small jurisdiction.

If it hurts poor people, tough shit! They should not have committed the crime!

Then shouldn't ALL people who owe fine and fees be prevented from voting until they pay up?
Absolutely!

Where did you get the idea that they shouldn't?

They don't have to. They get to vote. There is no law preventing them from voting.

We can start here with unpaid fines.

Just like a retard, you didn't even read you own linked material.

What part of unpaid fines do you not get?

Your link is talking about organizations, not individuals, dumbass!

So? Those in charge should lose their voting rights until fines are paid.

‘The judge called the Florida rules a “pay to vote” system that are unconstitutional when applied to felons “who are otherwise eligible to vote but are genuinely unable to pay the required amount.”’

Needless to say, Republicans will appeal the ruling and continue their voter suppression efforts.

This is also an example of the reprehensible right’s contempt for the will of the people, as the amendment to the Florida constitution restoring voting rights to ex-offenders was approved by an overwhelming majority of voters.
It's a poll tax and thus completely unconstitutional.

But republicans are OK with anything that suppresses turnout.

It's not a poll tax you moron.....they are felons, they broke the law and were sent to prison. Part of their punishment is often a fine that they need to pay to get right with what they did...you dumb ass....once they pay that they can vote...

A Poll Tax, you dumb ass....is a general tax on the Right to vote....you have to actually pay a fee to vote..this ain't that you dumb ass....
Sorry, it's a poll tax.

It's ok, I know you only really know that one line from the Constitution you claim to love.

It's only a poll tax if it applies to everyone.

Poll taxes were designed to keep the poor from voting.

You are a moron.
If you have to pay it before you can vote it's a poll tax.

Period fucking dot.

Wrong as usual.

I'm sorry, but that is incorrect.

Would you like to try again?

You should not vote.

The felons definitely should not vote. Criminals don't tell Americans how to live, any more than superlosers do.

Look everyone— yet another overt plug for the "right" of criminals to decide your fate. Remember, remember the third of November . . .

These people have served their time. There is no reason why they shouldn't be able to vote.

There is no reason they should be allowed to vote.

There is in fact no reason why most people should be allwoed to vote.

The right to vote was so fundamental the framers of the constitution didn't think it necessary to restate the obvious.

We were never a democracy. And obviously it is idiotic to give people voting rights who don't have a clue.

The idea is to have the best and the brightest vote, to create the best possible nation. Having criminals`or morons vote is beyond retarded, no good has ever come out of it. A reason for the demise. Unrestricted democracy is for retarded people.

We don't take the franchise from somebody except for good cause. And we don't judge the competence of the voter, except to require they be literate enough to read the ballot. It's a slippery slope to put requirements on who is knowledgeable enough to cast an intelligent vote. If they wanted to do that, they would outlaw party lines, and require voters vote purely by name, with no party identification.

Yes we do, and you aren't "we". We are the Americans, and we are not retarded enough to believe that unrestricted democracy works unlike egalitarian morons aka. communists.

Way too many people are voting currently, we must start restricting voting again in broad strokes. Only the best and brightest, those who you could trust to make responsible decisions for the entire nation.

Do you believe in the return to the original concept of the electoral college. A group of people chosen by the legislature to represent the state.

What I believe in is a system that is designed to build the best nation possible. Not the one that is not designed to cater to the feels of retarded people. This means less retards making important decisions on all of our behalf. Obvious stuff...

And of course..in that same vein..you are for the restoration of Gun rights to all ex-felons? Here's the thing...it has always been possible for an ex-felon to petition the court for the restoration of his/her constitutional rights. After about 10 years of a crime-free life....the petition is routinely granted.

I support restoration of both franchise and 2nd amendment rights to ex-felons. I doubt that the number who actually end up voting will make a difference. Anyway...having the franchise is having a stake in the game..citizens need that..IMO.

Should felons be able to vote unless their debt to society has been paid? No. There is something to be said though about states and municipalities increasingly willing using to use the offices of their district attorney and criminal justice system to generate revenue. It's no different than counties taking advantage of civil asset forfeitures by their sheriff departments. Long after a felon has served their time they could still be paying costs that are almost self generating since the state has an interest in keeping that money coming in.

If part of their plea bargain and sentencing included making financial restitution and they haven't fulfilled that...then they haven't "served their time", Don't Taz! Let's be honest here...lawyers work deals where sentences are reduced BECAUSE a promise of restitution is made! If you've signed up for that then it's on you to live up to the deal you've made!
