The Power of a Question

I'll see if I can find it but I think it was from around last summer, definitely before the election but I'll look and see if I can locate it on my machine.
Charlie Kirk was a class act all the way. Leftists could not have picked a worse man to martyr.
And yes, he was better than JFK or MLK Jr.; Charlie Kirk lived the life right according to God's ways.

In an honest exchange you're absolutely right, a question can initiate dialogue. But it can also reveal concerns, or provide bait.

Have you ever encountered anyone who has stated "If you've got nothing to hide, then what are you worried about"?

Plenty of times.
That sounds like cops that are asking to search your vehicle or something. Never allow that. :nono:
It's your 4th Amendment right to refuse.
It's better if one does. Because then they could plant things or whatever.
Full disclosure, the first time I did that, I had to go to the junkyard, find a car like my mom's, pull the passenger seat, haul it home and put it in before she saw what the cops did. They destroyed her passenger seat with a knife, and I was responsible.
It cost me like $60 and gas and everything I did. Her car was made whole that time.
Don't give cops permission to search if they don't have a warrant. :nono:
They could dismantle/trash your stuff right there on the spot if you do that.
As a general rule, there are exceptions.
I have only granted one right to search to police since that day, and refused about 4.

I don't completely disagree.

However, answering a question with a question is sometimes a smart efficient way to make a point or defend a position.

Oftentimes answering a question with a question is a trolling tactic to derail a topic or avoid answering a question.

2. Promptly reject all explanations as right wing lies. Smoke spin deflect.

3. Ignore any facts presented.

3a. Play dumb and keep others wasting their time trying to enlighten you.

4. Ridicule spelling and typos, punctuation.

5. Attack the person as being juvenile, ie: "are you 12 years old", question their education, intelligence, Age.

6. Employ misdirection.

6a. smear people.

6b. attack religion.

6c. attack your rationality.

But, avoid answering a question with a question.
Answer the question, then ask a question.
Yes, but sometimes you need to clarify the question (especially of a troll).

For example,

"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"
"What do you mean... African or European swallow?" *

* Nerdy Monty Python reference

That's never been my experience or intention (to derail.)

I've always been a fan of the Socratic method and here's why.

I have family members who are teachers.

We have had many discussions on how people teach, "learn," what it takes for a person to change their views, to admit they were wrong about something, etc.

"Discovery" is probably the best way for a person to learn something, and because "discovery" is personal to the "discoverer," it is much more effective, long term.

If someone asks me a familiar question and I know what the answer is, I believe they will respect that answer MORE if they discover the answer for themself, rather than if I just point at it from my side.

Some of these points can be used legitimately and all of us have at times. E.g. #1, and 3 & 5 (when dealing with an intentionally obtuse troll).

Yes! That's meant to share with people.
Do so as I did, please.
What you do is you save the whole thing in a text and then highlight whichever one they're doing in bold.
It applies to very many situations. Almost all, really.
That's from me, miketx, and Lucy Hamilton to you.

Yes, and they murdered Socrates as well for his pursuit of the truth and asking questions, just like Charlie.

Socrates warned others of taking the same path because they would suffer the same fate.

Socrates' legacy lived on and still does to this day.

In my foray here in USMB, I have engaged in tens of thousands of political debates with numerous posters, past and current. I started debating politics on a local newspaper forum here in my hometown in 2011. I ran into a woman who taught me that asking questions is an effective debate tool and a formidable weapon in debates. She taught me how to do research, to cite facts in rebuttal, argumentative fallacies -- the works. I was a right-wing extremist in my 20s, and what she taught me helped bring me out of it. It took me a long time to get where I am now.

But the power of simply asking a question cannot be denied. It is how you glean information, how you force others to come to terms with a set reality, to expose the truth, or to solve a problem. I encourage you, the forum membership, to ask questions. The power of a question is unparalleled. There are no stupid questions, no silly questions, or bad questions. The worst question is the one left unasked.

Remember, ask questions. Defy ignorance. Set the darkness alight with a simple question.
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
