The Orwellian Prohibition: Any Mention of Mr. Trump’s Felon Status On The House Floor

No toleration of criticizing Mr. Trump as a felon is allowed. Is this the ultimate in cancel culture? Gaga order? Is this an attack on Freedom of Speech, disguised as some congressional rule preventing certain types of speech?

What slippery road has the GOP of today gone down in order to shield, or protect Mr. Trump? What kind of behavior is this?

On the House Floor, Republicans Gag Mentions of Trump’s Conviction

During official proceedings of the G.O.P.-controlled chamber, speaking about former President Donald J. Trump’s felony conviction has been forbidden, while disparaging President Biden and Democrats is routine.

The Republicans who now hold the majority have used those rules to impose what is essentially a gag order against talking about Mr. Trump’s hush-money payments to a porn actress or about the fact that he is a felon at all, notwithstanding that those assertions are no longer merely allegations but the basis of a jury’s guilty verdict. Doing so, they have declared, is a violation of House rules.

...

“The chair would remind members to refrain from engaging in personalities toward presumptive nominees for the office of the president,” is now a common phrase heard in the chamber after the mention of the words “Trump” and “felon.”

On one occasion, Republicans barred Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, from speaking for the rest of the day and deleted his comments from the Congressional Record after he railed against Mr. Trump and his court cases.

“When they censor any mention of Donald Trump’s criminal convictions, they are essentially trying to ban a fact,” Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, said in an interview. “I am not aware of any precedent where factual statements have been banned in our lifetime.”

Considering the kangaroo nature of the charges I think it's a good rule. At this point it amounts to defamation.

Some democrats want all mention of Trump's felony convictions to stop. Every time a Democrat says the word felony, Trump gets another million in campaign donations.
Lol.... Yeah it didn't work out so well for them.

Procrustes Stretched

Good Grief Sir, Washington DC is a Gangster's Paradise. If violating one's oath of office regarding protecting the US Constitution is a felony, the entire damn congress is full of felons.

They are a bunch of lawyers. Technically there is no felon status until sentencing. Especially true in Trump's case since the verdict might be overturned on a mistrial.
Your post suggests that a person's action against another person, assault or rape for example, is not a felony until that person is sentenced. I don't buy into that specious line of thinking. Whether a person is duly convicted or not, the crime lies in the action, NOT in the "justice" system's response to it.

It doesn't matter what you buy into or not. As a matter of legal procedure, there is no conviction until the judge enters a judgment of conviction. Usually this happens at sentencing.

Everything else is your worthless opinion.

You remember that old line from Oliver Twist back in the 1800s ? "The law sir, is an ass"

True then and true now. Elected officials commit felonious acts every single day. Gullible fools look the other way, but most people now understand the government is wholly owned by special interests and violates one law or another routinely.

It's the same law it's always been.

That's a falsehood, for sure. The powers that be change the meanings of words and laws as they please.

You would have me believe that if Bobby rapes Sue it's not a felony until Bobby is caught, prosecuted and sentenced. Sophistry, Evil Cat, pure unadulterated sophistry.

Absolutely. In other words ABSOLUTELY INNOCENT. I can only understand your position if you are not an American, not educated in American schools or somehow not educated or maleducated completely. Or amusing yourself by making up nonsense.

Our entire criminal justice system is predicated in an accused being innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Like the J6 folks? You're full of it ECB

Oh there are many words. Snake Oil Salesman is one. Someone selling the idea that there is no crime unless a person is prosecuted for it.
It is the very foundation of our entire criminal justice system. The act exists, now find and prosecute the person who did it. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

On what possible basis could you understand differently? Find a link. Anything.

I'm using simple logic. If there is such a thing as a convicted felon, logic demands there must be its opposite, an unconvicted felon. That is, a person who committed a felony, but was never convicted for it, that "got away with it". This morning it appears you want me to believe that there is no such thing as a person getting away with a crime. If you really believe that sophistry....

No matter what your logic tells you. The law in the United States is that everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Now find something that says differently, other than your logic.

Real life says differently, what we call Reality (bites). There are countless examples, many uncovered by The Innocence Project and DNA technology. Countless people "convicted" of a felony that had not committed any crime at all.

You must be very young to take such an idealistic/unrealistic sophistry position. Maybe you're still in law school?

I retired after 35 years as a criminal defense attorney.

Countless people who have not committed any crimes have been convicted of those crimes in a court of law. That means convicted.

Live by a gag order, die by a gag order. LMAO, hypocrite.
Trump had a gag a maggot order on him because of his big mouth threatening anyone involved in the case, you moron.

Put your "I'm With Stupid" MAGA brain drain cap on for good, dunce.
