Making the phrase "the new normal" was the start. Before it really began it was used to psychologically prepare people for the coming changes so they aren't shocked. It prepared them to expect changes, and if you expect something you're more willing to accept it.

Language is the first step in conditioning people and our language has been altered more rapidly in the past year than the last 20 years.

Every generation changes language to some small degree. But recently it has had major changes in severity, frequency and meaning of a lot of words and phrases. Censorship and acceptability of a lot of language has also happened.

I don't think most people yet realize how much our language is changing and what it's doing yet.
