It wasn't until they started retiring from Congress that Republicans were able to convince the constituents to vote for their party instead. Republicans exploited Democratic support for Civil Rights to turn voters Republican.

It helped them with the presidential elections, but that's about it. The southern states remained heavily Democratic well into the 2000s. Several states still had Democratic legislatures until the Tea Party election in 2010 finally flipped the last of them.
