When federal judges in San Francisco ruled in 2002 that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools was unconstitutional because it included the phrase "under God," Sarah Palin was not amused. Palin, who at the time was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, quickly drafted a terse letter to the editor of a San Francisco newspaper.

Dear Editor,
San Francisco judges forbidding our Pledge of Allegiance? They will take the phrase ‘under God’ away from me when my cold, dead lips can no longer utter those words. God Bless America
--- Sarah Palin, 2002

I'm surprised PMSNBC is mentioning this. There are maybe 3-4 metro areas in the US where it could hurt her. It'll resonate everywhere else.

seperation between church and state!

seperation between church and state!
which doesnt appear anywhere in the constitution
what a constiotution DOES say, however, is that the government can not restrict religion or establish a state mandated religion

On a side note, here Ninja, MSNBC is a disgrace , the entire network has lost all it's ethics in this election. The lastest commercial running only on MSNBC mocking John McCains cancer, produced by Howard Deans brother is a good example. Since Jeffery Immelt took over G.E. 7 years ago. they have constantly lost money in just about every single division. I have stock in G.E. and can tell the stock holders are mad as hell. So anything that comes from MSNBC does not surprise me. However, they will soon be sold . from what I hear, . Recently asked about possible G.E. Entertainment divisions that he would be interested in News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch said that "MSNBC is not all that attractive as they are have been a constant strain on the bottom line for G.E. , but some divisions are, such as USA Network which News Corp. would be interested in buying.

we were founded on religious freedom and not everyone in this country believes in God!
To me I could careless either way but I am sure some do!

personally I watch PBS mostly they seemed to be the most unbiased news out there. They also have commentators from both sides!

"One of the amendments to the Constitution... expressly declares that 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press,' thereby guarding in the same sentence and under the same words, the freedom of religion, of speech, and of the press; insomuch that whatever violates either throws down the sanctuary which covers the others." --Thomas Jefferson

Maybe they are trying to have one thing on their side what is it 76% of americans are christians. Minority rights are always shoved aside!

Wrong. Religious people who do not think the Pledge should have been changed to say the country is under God also object.

As far as atheists "compromising" do you know many religious people willing to swear there is no God?

I try to move around the channel Luissa the best I can, but I avoid MSNBC for a reason. I apologize for the lack of a link on McCain story, as it applies to MSNBC, but once I find it again I will repost it.

I watch other shows and yes I like Keith! And I watch CNN but most of the time I watch PBS, I especially like the BBC news on there! It gives an outsides point of view to the US and it very unbiased!

Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. He was a Christian Socialist. In his Pledge, he is expressing the ideas of his first cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of the American socialist utopian novels, Looking Backward (1888) and Equality (1897).

Francis Bellamy in his sermons and lectures and Edward Bellamy in his novels and articles described in detail how the middle class could create a planned economy with political, social and economic equality for all. The government would run a peace time economy similar to our present military industrial complex.

The Pledge was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth's Companion, the leading family magazine and the Reader's Digest of its day. Its owner and editor, Daniel Ford, had hired Francis in 1891 as his assistant when Francis was pressured into leaving his baptist church in Boston because of his socialist sermons. As a member of his congregation, Ford had enjoyed Francis's sermons. Ford later founded the liberal and often controversial Ford Hall Forum, located in downtown Boston.

In 1892 Francis Bellamy was also a chairman of a committee of state superintendents of education in the National Education Association. As its chairman, he prepared the program for the public schools' quadricentennial celebration for Columbus Day in 1892. He structured this public school program around a flag raising ceremony and a flag salute - his 'Pledge of Allegiance.'

The Pledge of Allegiance - A Short History

It began as an intensive communing with salient points of our national history, from the Declaration of Independence onwards; with the makings of the Constitution...with the meaning of the Civil War; with the aspiration of the people...

The true reason for allegiance to the Flag is the 'republic for which it stands.' ...And what does that vast thing, the Republic mean? It is the concise political word for the Nation - the One Nation which the Civil War was fought to prove. To make that One Nation idea clear, we must specify that it is indivisible, as Webster and Lincoln used to repeat in their great speeches. And its future?

Just here arose the temptation of the historic slogan of the French Revolution which meant so much to Jefferson and his friends, 'Liberty, equality, fraternity.' No, that would be too fanciful, too many thousands of years off in realization. But we as a nation do stand square on the doctrine of liberty and justice for all...

BBC News is good actually Luissa, I try to watch news from Russia every so often, when you can catch it late at night on one of the Financial channels. CNN I watch on occasion, but you know, I find that local news, at least these days is better at delivering news both national and local than the "talking heads" are.

Are playing dumb or are you truly dumb?
It's about being made to swear to God in a public school.
It's offensive to be forced to swear your country is subject to someone else's religion.
