While I agree that it was necessary in that case, since then whistle-blower laws have largely negated the need for protecting a source which has been over-used to the extreme. This 'yellow journalism' championed by big publishers like Hearst and Pulitzer was countered by 'muckrakers' who were just as bad but in opposition.
