Trump falsely suggests FBI agents to blame for igniting Jan. 6 violence
President Donald Trump on Saturday falsely accused the FBI of fomenting the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol — a sharp escalation of his attacks on the bureau and his effort to downplay the violence a mob of his supporters inflicted that day.Trump on social media said the FBI had “secretly placed” 274 agents into the crowd of rioters who stormed the Capitol to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
In reality, the inspector general of the Justice Department revealed 10 months ago that “hundreds” of FBI agents went to the Capitol to assist at the request of the beleaguered Capitol Police. The bureau also had personnel responding to pipe bombs placed outside the national Republican and Democratic parties’ headquarters and to a vehicle full of explosives.
The inspector general did find that 26 FBI confidential sources — who are not employees of the bureau but have at times shared information — were among the crowd that day. But nearly all of them, the IG found, did not tell the bureau of their plans to attend, and none were instructed to violate any laws or participate in the riot.
The IG report also found “no evidence” that the agency had “undercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6.”
The president’s post appears to be an escalation that falsely accuses the agency of inciting the riot, based on a series of reports across conservative websites. On Thursday, Just The News said it obtained an “after action report” that was turned over to a recently launched House subcommittee to reinvestigate Jan. 6. Just The News claimed the report — of which the veracity has not been confirmed by POLITICO — revealed the FBI “had a total of 274 agents deployed to the Capitol in plainclothes and with guns after the violence started” but with no clear identification.

New York AG Letitia James indicted by grand jury, MSNBC reports
New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday by a grand jury in Virginia on at least one count of bank fraud after evidence presented by a prosecutor hand-picked by President Donald Trump, MSNBC reported.James is a long-time antagonist of Trump.
The same prosecutor who obtained the indictment, Lindsey Halligan, recently obtained a criminal indictment against another Trump foe, former FBI Director James Comey.
Dotard is doing what he can to turn us in to a banana republic.

The nation’s three most powerful law enforcement officials — Attorney General Pam Bondi and her top deputy, Todd Blanche, along with Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director — padded into the Oval Office on Wednesday for a public show of unity and to herald some recent successes.They left about an hour later, after President Trump tossed out, offhandedly, three names of people he wanted prosecuted: Jack Smith, the special counsel who brought two criminal indictments against him; Andrew Weissmann, a former F.B.I. official who was a lead prosecutor for the team investigating the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia in the 2016 election; and Lisa Monaco, the deputy attorney general under President Joseph R. I think she should be looked at very strongly.”

DOJ preparing subpoenas in investigation into John Brennan
The Department of Justice is preparing to issue a series of grand jury subpoenas as part of a South Florida-based investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan and the probes by the CIA and FBI into Russian interference in the 2016 election, MSNBC has learned.The investigation is being supervised by the U.S. attorney in South Florida, Jason Reding Quiñones, in consultation with Justice Department senior staff in Washington, according to a source familiar with the matter and other information obtained by MSNBC.
The Justice Department declined to comment.
The Florida-based inquiry comes two years after a special counsel appointed by then-Attorney General Bill Barr concluded a lengthy and exhaustive investigation that found no criminal wrongdoing by Brennan or any other major figure connected with the Russian election interference matter. Barr had appointed the special counsel in late 2020, during the first Trump administration.
