From "The Missing" directed by Ron Howard and starring Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones, and others.
Maggie: ( Cate to the Native Indian father who abandoned her and the family ) "Why didn't you stay?"
Samuel: ( Tommy Lee ) [long pause] There's an Apache story about a man that woke up one morning and saw a hawk on the wind. Walked outside and never returned. After he died he met his wife in the spirit world. She asked him why he never came home, he said "Well, the hawk kept flying".
My fave line in the movie though, was when he was trying to explain to the long abandoned and bitter adult daughter of the West in the 1900s: "A man can't protect his family from himself."
