It hurt those who didn’t improve themselves. Thinking things will always stay the same is unrealistic
So, you knew that it did hurt the working class. That bit where you pretended that you didn't know it, that was just a pretense, to see if you could sell the last line of defense.

That's just a rationalization for not having an answer or being actively hostile to them.
IN reality, it is not nearly as easy as you make it out to "improve" oneself.
You get training, that's fine. Now you are competing against younger people with the same level of training. Say you get the job anyways. That is one less job for the younger people you out competed.
The end result is a demographic, a socio-economic class that has interests, and those interests have NOT been represented in policy for a long time.
AND, your position is one of hostility to the idea of even discussing their/our interests.
