That 'famous' Lincoln quote in Lara Trump's RNC speech? He never said it

"What's True
The "quotation" attributed to Lincoln paraphrases and distills a concept he expressed in an 1838 speech in Springfield, Ill., without distorting the meaning or sense of the original.
What's False
Lincoln did not write or utter the words as expressed in online meme versions."

Did Theodore Roosevelt say that we should not elect a senile old man? who knows! he might have said it privately! you never know!

Hilarious. Lara Trump's misquote was closer to the truth than this retard professor's version:

LINCOLN WAS WARNING US ABOUT TRUMP!!!

" 'America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.'"

of course....what she REALLY MEANS is....

"if we WHITE CONSERVATIVE EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS ever lose our FIRM GRIP on the government and lives of the people it will because we let people with intelligent, rational and reasonable opinions have the same free speech as we do!"

rational thought will be your destruction

Who cares?
I’m always finding “made-up” quotes like this on the Internet, and often right here on USMB. I don’t even bother anymore in correcting them ... because the partisans who circulate them really don’t care.

Most — but certainly not all — of those who recirculate fake quotes and then feel no embarrassment about it, are ignorant right wingers out to make a point and too lazy to do more than take quotes off the internet. These “quotes” are usually found inside little boxes with photos of the supposed author and no specific reference. Any person truly familiar with American history and Lincoln’s writing style would have immediately suspected this quote for the fraud it was.

Who cares” about historical accuracy? Everybody should. One doesn’t have to be a “democratic socialist” like George Orwell to understand the steady degeneration of the English language in service to U.S. political propaganda. Of course Democrats have their own problems with “PC” language. That this was not caught earlier by Republican fact checkers and speech writers shows the low level of historical literacy of today’s Trump-supporting Republican Party.

Lincoln was among the finest political thinkers of his time, in my opinion our greatest President, whose prose at different periods in his career captured the tortuous reality of mid-19th Century American “liberty” trapped and obstructed by the political, economic and ideological vise of chattel slavery and white supremacist thinking.

Lincoln’s private letters to close friends often expressed his thoughts most clearly. Here he is speaking with his closest friend about the 19th Century “Know Nothing” anti-immigrant, so-called “American Party,” who’s political support he needed. When this “Native American Party” collapsed as Lincoln hoped it would, many of its leaders were won over to the “anti-slavery” Union cause:

I am not a Know-Nothing—that is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes." When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equals, except negroes and foreigners and Catholics." When it comes to that I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty—to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

Of course the “American Party” of the 1850s was very different than today’s MAGA Republicans and Trump supporters. Instead of old-fashioned anti-Catholic xenophobia, today we have paranoia about atheists and “Satanists,” Cold War witch-hunting of socialists, and demagogy about “pro-looting” & “baby killing” Democrats — all of them “Flag Burning Traitors” to “America.”

It might not have been word for word but the idea was essentially correctly attributed to Lincoln. It's ironic that Lincoln apparently didn't believe his own words but the media liked him better than they like the Trump's.

Snopes lists it as a mixture of true and false.

Lincoln didn't utter those EXACT words, but Lara's words are at least paraphrasing him.

Molehill, meet mountain.

Dumb ass talk about Ironic from your source
As Albert Einstein once notably stated, "The problem with quotes you find on the internet is they are often untrue."
Albert Einstein Died on April 18, 1955
The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET , or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.

So how can Einsteins quote be correct when there wasn't any type of internet for at least 10 years after his death?
