Texas Man and His Dog Found Dead After Becoming Trapped Inside Car - NBC News

june 10 2015
A U.S. Army veteran from Texas and his dog were found dead after an electronic malfunction apparently caused the pair to become trapped inside the man's sports car.

Port Arthur police officials say 72-year-old James Rogers and his Shih Tzu, named "Baby Girl" Leia, were found unresponsive inside the Chevy Corvette on Monday afternoon.

Police believe Rogers became trapped inside the car with electric locks and windows after a battery cable came loose and locked the doors and disabled the horn, NBC affiliate KBMT reported
The 2007 Corvette does not have manual door lock, leaving Rogers and Leia unable to escape and likely dying of heat, according to KBMT, quoting fire officials.

Holy shit! We've become so obsessed with technology that we've lost some sense.

Who makes a car without manual locks?

72 years old, high heat inside, probably became disoriented or panicy and couldn't figure out how to save himslef.

Have always said electronic locks and windows are a dumb idea. What if you go into water? Things short out and you're screwed.

Could you?

I have a handy little hand sized gadget in my car made to facilitate exiting a car in situation like that.

Car windows are hard to break without special tools designed to do it easily. Have tried breaking a car window's with a Maglite flashlight to no avail. And you may have seen that news reporter doing a segment and whacking one with a hammer rpeeatedly not breaking it.

They're not easy to break like in the movies and tv shows. :)

Who makes a car without manual locks?

Article says there is a way to manually unlock the doors but most owners don't know about it.

Flashlight?? Made of plastic or rubber? . Sure - that won't work. But he could have found something that would have worked.

There are little metal rods specificly for breaking auto glass. By focusing the impact into a tiny point it does it really easily. Most improvised methods the energies getting spread out over too large an rea and the glass doesn't break. Like lying out flat on thin ice so ya don't fall through, whereas if standing all your weight is concentrated on a tiny area an dya fall through.

His age might have had something to do with it.

It's called a screwdriver and you can buy one for a buck at wally. No need to spend $30 on some specialty item.

and you're driving a truck, not a vette, with your toolbox behind your seat. He wasn't. and that little tool runs $10-$20 at the most..

Also, most screwdrivers have a long shank, would could make the tip slide when it hits the glass..

I'll stick with the item designed for the job.

You won't be able to open the door under water without first breaking the window and equalizing the pressure.

Get a spring loaded impact punch. It is recomended for these situations. Put the point on the window and push. Thats it and your window will shatter.
