It's getting creepy watching all these dead people walking up to the bank to cash their checks. I mean I have to wait in line too long now but on check day it's getting ridiculous. Old people are slow but the dead are even slower. Man, they don't smell too swell either.

There are only about 70 million people in total getting SS. There may be hundreds of deceased getting payments, but certainly not millions or tens of millions.

Over the weekend, Musk posted a table supposedly showing that the Social Security database has millions of people in it over the age of 140.

"Ninety-eight percent of social security number holders who are age 100 or older do not receive benefits, Justin Wolfers, professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan, explained on X. “Why are there dead people on (this one table of) the social security database? They died before the use of electronic death records,” he added.


So the real question here is are they really that stupid?

Most fraud is in SS Disability not 150 year olds getting benefits.

No one disputes that Death Fraud in SS retirement exists. And as you point out the question is "how much".

I agree 100% fraud should be rooted out and punished to the maximuim extent of the law.

But let's be honest. Musks/Trumps claims (or inuendo) that there are millions and millions of SS retirement beneficiaries over 100+ receiving benefits is a flat out lie.

The 2020 census put the number of American's over the age of 100 at a little over 90,000. In December SS Retirement benefits were paid to 89,106. Not "millions of people".

Ya, we have seen data on 100+, it's available to the public.

Of course from a database standpoint it's relevant to ask, but you have to then factor in that SS was started in 1935 prior to modern computer systems and that it's current core functionality runs on COBOL with is decades past it's prime. 100 years ago the recored of births and deaths at the time was just as likely to be a note in the family Bible.

Musk started a shit storm (intentionally I belive) by implying there were millions of 100+ people draw SS retirement benfits when the dataw shows there were 89,106.

Yes, there is fraud in social security. Everyone knows there is some fraud. How much? Probably not very much and there are systems in place to identify it and deal with it. At a certain point, you can spend more money dealing with fraud then you recover in actually finding it.

But that’s not the claim being made. The claim going around right wing media is that there are millions of dead people receiving benefits. That’s obviously untrue but it doesn’t stop the social media disinformation. If you guys had any common sense, this story would have immediately died and Musk would have been embarrassed for tweeting half baked nonsense.

And when the disinformation is pointed out, you retreat to claiming that any fraud is consistent with what you’re saying.
