Yes, his approach was brilliant. By getting the more reasonable Arab countries to forge complete diplomatic ties with Israel, it weakens the power of the antisemitic Arab countries by sending a message to them - and the world - that Israel is a reasonable country.

Analogy: It’s like the mean kid bully (Iran) in the schoolyard. He torments his target (Israel) with threats that he wants him dead. Other kids getting pulled into it, and side with bully, never really questioning whether the targeted kid is deserving of the threats.

But then, teacher explains to the other kids (knowing that reasoning with the bully is hopeless) that the bullied kid is actually quite reasonable and wants a good relationship with them. Some of the other kids see reason, and start playing with the bullied kid, thus weakening the bully.

This is the point where Trump had the Middle East. Had he be allowed to continue, he likely could have gotten some of the more reluctant kids to see reason. Eventually, the bully and perhaps one or two of his meanie friends would Be standing alone, watching the rest of the class play with the once-bullied kid.
