Teachable Moment Indeed

Where will American companies turn when the well of basic research by universities and the NIH runs dry? The money is well-spent, even if the results aren’t immediately evident.
That depends on what the money is spent on. Which depends on the current regime.

Well, something like this:

"For years, decades really, I've been arguing with liberals who seemingly want every important social function regulated, controlled or outright owned by the government. In general my objections are dismissed as reactionary complaints from a "stingy conservative" - but that's not it. Never was.

My comments, always ignored, centered on the folly of putting these services at the mercy of an election. If the government controls education, healthcare, welfare, etc ... then education, healthcare, welfare, etc .. are subject to the political winds. They are at risk every time a new administration takes over. We're seeing it unfold now.

Maybe liberals will learn something from all this.

Sometimes freedom is more important than "free"."

What are you actually trying to say?
dblack, we have been on opposite sides of a lot of issues, you are a liberal and I am a conservative who both realize that too much government interference is just as bad as too much corporate interference.

We both realize that the three branches of government are overstepping their authority at the behest of corporate America, as long as we give government too much control, we will have constant tug of war every election when power shifts from one side to the other.

The solution is to reset but that won’t happen until the citizens unite and hold our politicians accountable, but they are doing a good job keeping us distracted and fighting.

I think that dblack's tendencies run to small Government Conservatism
Since neither of you actually participate - it's moot.

Is your complaint against federal government control over state government control? No matter which government is in control, ultimately, the people are in control since the people elect their government.
The problem is not government control. The problem is nitwits electing a nitwit.

Both - though state control is less oppressive (ie easier to work around).
No matter which government is in control, ultimately, the people are in control since the people elect their government.
No. I reject that bromide. Even in a best case scenario, with no corruption, etc .. only the majority controls the government. Often at the minority's great detriment.

There will always be nitwits. And people to elect them. The less government controls, the less impact the nitwits will have.

Agree with your post, but I'm curious - what makes you think I'm a liberal? I'd gladly cop to being "classical liberal" or "libertarian", but I don't support modern Democrats or progressives at all.

I’m talking traditional liberals from the 60’s and 70’s, you have principles and values that you stick to, today’s liberals and conservatives move like the wind, Obama was for deporting illegals, getting rid of government waste but today now they are against it, conservatives used to be for universal health care and are now against it. No consistency. Their views change with the winds, your ideals are pretty consistent.

We do but you being part of the party of big government and partisan politics don’t like free thinkers.
