For years, decades really, I've been arguing with liberals who seemingly want every important social function regulated, controlled or outright owned by the government. In general my objections are dismissed as reactionary complaints from a "stingy conservative" - but that's not it. Never was.

My comments, always ignored, centered on the folly of putting these services at the mercy of an election. If the government controls education, healthcare, welfare, etc ... then education, healthcare, welfare, etc .. are subject to the political winds. They are at risk every time a new administration takes over. We're seeing it unfold now.

Maybe liberals will learn something from all this.

Sometimes freedom is more important than "free".

We have seen the danger over here when conservatives control our health. But what is the answer ?

Democracy rests on the willingness of leaders to follow rules, law and precedent. There is no solution for an administration that wont that doesn't involve conflict.

You seem to have missed the point. I'm not talking about corruption. I'm talking about the "mandates" of democratic rule. If the government controls healthcare, for example, and the majority decides that we should change the way we do healthcare - you're along for the ride. Like it or not.

You mean a system where hospital chiiefs are shot in the streets and the killer becomes a folk hero ?
No. I mean that we should avoid putting important social functions under government control unless it's absolutely necessary.

Oligarchs influence needs to be curtailed. Govt isnt great but musk, bezos rule is worse.

It depends on who makes the rules then doesn't it? We can keep saying the Constitution, the Constitution. We are far from it in many ways today.

It is like it is because of industrialization, duh.

By not letting them control society via the government. We can always say no to private business. We don't have that option with government.
Noticed how Trump is personally controlling the social outlets of society that the government operates, ie, the Kennedy Center. Both parties love their culture wars.

Over here we get to vote the govt out. Im sure you have that option over there.

That's the way democracy works. I have no issue not getting my way. But disbanding the Dept of Education illegally isnt majority will.

Honestly, I never thought educ needed to be separated from HWandE.

But imo there's something valid to the overstatement that progressives (not liberals like JFK or Truman ... or even Slick) want equality in outcome. Or they want the poorest kid to have the same shot at success as the richest. And life doesn't work out that way.

Liberals never learn. When something doesn't work, they always think the answer is to do more of what doesn't work. They do it with everything.

Well, something like this:
