SC murders up by more than 20 percent in 2011, SLED says | GoUpstate.com
The realities of Tea Party style governing are sometimes not immediately seen. They have great slogans to slap on bumper stickers. But when they actually apply them to governing, well, bad shit happens.
In 2010, the Tea Party swept into power throughout my state, South Carolina, like it did in many other parts of the country. Local mayors in the metro areas of Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, Myrtle Beach embraced Tea Party shenanigans, and applied them to their city budgets, in particular police. The Tea Party Queen, Nikki Haley, took over as governor. She immediately made big cuts to the state police (SLED and Highway Patrol), and slashed aid to local city budgets. Note: SC already had among the lowest taxes in America.
The result? Well, in just 1 year, the murder rate jumped 21%. Less cops. Less detectives. Less patrols. What does it mean? Easy. More crime.
Also according to the study:
The states violent crime rate has exceeded national average for decades. Same with it's murder rate, robbery rate, property crime rate.
Statistically, in 2006 the City of North Charleston was the 7th most dangerous city in America.
Yet, our Tea Party leaders want to further cut police budgets, and add even more guns to the streets.
And they wonder why people are leaving the GOP.
