A suicide bombing attack struck a NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan, near Kandahar city on Wednesday.
The assault, that was claimed by the Taliban left two American service members dead, a Pentagon spokesman said, even though U.S. military officials in Afghanistan refused to provide any information about the casualties.
Claiming responsibility for the attack, a Taliban spokesman for the insurgents said the bombing allegedly killed 15 soldiers but local reports pointed out that the Taliban routinely exaggerates their gains and casualty figures.
Taliban also said the attack destroyed two armoured tanks.
Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, Taliban spokesman for southern Afghanistan said fighter Asadullah Kandahari was the "hero" who carried out the attack with a small pick-up truck packed with explosives.
During the five-year rule of the Taliban, which ended with the U.S. invasion in 2001, Kandahar provi.nce was the insurgent group’s spiritual heartland and the headquarters of their leadership.
